A newly redeveloped cancer care centre designed with the help of patients and their families has opened. The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Care Centre at York Hospital has undergone a £2.4m expansion and refurbishment to support people living with the disease. York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said people affected by cancer had influenced "everything" in the facility, from the services it offers to its furnishings, artwork and colour schemes.
The project was delivered through a partnership between the trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, in response to growing demand across York and the wider region. Angie Lunt, from Riccall, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, was among members of a community group that helped develop plans for the centre. She said the previous facility had been "pivotal" in her recovery, supporting both her physical health and mental wellbeing.
"Having somewhere safe, welcoming and non-clinical to go, where you can take a moment to reflect and process what you're going through, makes such a difference," she said. She said she was "incredibly proud" to have used her experience to help shape a centre that would support cancer patients and their families in future.
